Our Breeding Philosophy
Our Breeding Philosophy
At Prairie View Farms we enjoy raising Aussies. Our pups are born in the house and well-socialized from the onset. They grow up in the midst of their aunts, grandma, half-siblings and father, along with their loving human parents as well.
We have put our emphasis on the maternal bloodline of our dogs, choosing striking males to complement our female line when needed. When we started breeding Aussies they were not recognized yet by the AKC, hence we registered our dogs with the breed-specific Australian Shepherd Club of America (ASCA). ASCA is the original founding organization for registering Aussies and promotes breed-specific shows organized just for registered Aussies. We have since introduced bloodlines that are AKC registered as well and now offer double registered pups.
The result of our selective breeding over the years is a versatile dog that is as much at home herding cattle as in your backyard. While each Aussie's temperament, drive, and personality differ, our dogs can be found as breeding stock in kennels across the country, working cattle and sheep on the ranch, running agility courses, and in the conformation and obedience ring. Let us know what you are looking for and we can help you determine the pup with the right attitude and personality for your lifestyle.
We do want to take this opportunity to inform you as a potential buyer that we do not breed merle to merle nor will we sell a merle pup for breeding purposes if you plan on crossing them with a merle. There is no reason that a breeder should take the chance on crossing merles when the end result can be puppies born with too much white around their eyes and ears, a telltale sign of blindness and deafness in the Australian Shepherd. Responsible breeders will not do this as it produces a pup who must either be put down or faces a dangerous impaired life.
In the 30 years we have been raising Aussies, we have had a 100% live birth rate and have never lost a pup. Our dogs are vaccinated before each pregnancy to ensure strong antibodies at birth for our pups, and our females are supplemented with vitamins and calcium pills during pregnancy and while nursing. The results show.
